Quito is the capital of Ecuador. Quito has a population of 1,504,991 inhabitants (2005), making it the second most populous city in the country after Guayaquil. Has a total area of 290 km². The average altitude at which the city is located, 2 800 m, which ranks as the second highest situated capital in the world after La Paz, Bolivia. The city was founded by Spanish conquistador Sebastian Benalkasar in 1534
